🌊 Beachfront Bliss on a Budget: A Weekend at Huguenot Campground, FL

.

Who says a weekend beach escape has to break the bank? Just outside of Jacksonville, Florida, lies Huguenot Memorial Park — an underrated, budget-friendly gem that lets you camp steps from the sand with unbeatable ocean views, loads of natural charm, and all the outdoor fun you could want.

Whether you’re rolling in with an RV or pitching a tent, Huguenot Campground offers a unique way to experience Florida’s coastline — and trust me, you’ll want to come back again and again.

💸 Affordable Camping Right on the Beach

This trip was one of the most affordable getaways we’ve done. Rates are super reasonable:

  • RV camping: $24 per night
  • Tent camping: $20 per night

Yep, you read that right. You can fall asleep to the sound of waves and wake up with your toes in the sand for less than the price of a fast-food dinner.

🏕️ What the Campground Offers

We were blown away by how much this campground had to offer — without the crowds or chaos of more commercial beach destinations. Here’s what you’ll find:

  • Beachfront camping – Yes, actual beach views from your campsite!
  • Playground – Great for families traveling with kids.
  • Clean restrooms and showers – A huge bonus when beach camping.
  • Pet-friendly campsites – Dogs are allowed at your site, though not on the shoreline (so keep that leash handy!).
  • Each campsite includes a picnic table and a fire ring – Perfect for beachside dinners and cozy campfires.
  • Electric hookup at every site – Great for RVs or charging essentials.
  • Potable water station – Easily accessible for filling up containers.
  • Dump station – Convenient for RVs before heading home.
  • You’re allowed two vehicles per campsite, which makes it super convenient if you’re traveling with friends or bringing extra gear.

🚙 Drive-On Beach Access (4×4 Highly Recommended)

One of the coolest things? You can actually drive your vehicle right onto the beach! But be warned: while some areas are accessible to standard vehicles, a 4×4 is highly recommended (and totally needed) for deeper, softer sand — we had to help a fellow beachgoer who got stuck on a sand dune and ripped her skid plate off after trying to reverse out!

Bring your beach chairs, snacks, and surfboard — and skip the long hauls from the parking lot. You’ll be set up in no time.

🐚 Natural Fun: Surfing, Shark Teeth & Shoreline Surprises

There’s no shortage of adventure at Huguenot. We spent our days:

  • Surfing (or at least trying to! 😉)
  • Hunting for shark teeth — we didn’t find any but another lady had a whole baggie full!
  • Beachcombing at low tide — we even found a starfish one morning, which felt like pure magic.
  • Fishing on both sides of the island

Pro tip: if you’re into fishing, the bayside is legendary. We met some locals who told us stories of catching a 55-inch redfish right from the shore. Now that’s a fish tale I want to live someday!

🏄‍♀️ Surf’s Up!

Huguenot isn’t just a peaceful beach — it also offers some fun, mellow waves that are perfect for cruising on a longboard. During our trip, the waves were around 1–2 feet, and I was able to catch a couple on my longboard, which made my whole morning. 🌊

From what I saw on local surf reports, the average wave height here usually ranges from 1–3 feet, so while it’s not the spot for big barrels or shortboard shredding (as my husband would’ve preferred!), it’s ideal for beginners, cruisers, and anyone looking to have some low-key fun in the water.

We also saw a few surf camps set up right along the shoreline, which is such a great option if you’re traveling with kids. Whether your little ones are total beginners or just want to try something new, it’s a great way to introduce them to surfing in a friendly, safe environment.

🐦‍⬛🐢 Wildlife Watch: Birds, Tortoises & Surprise Visitors

Huguenot is a dream for nature lovers. The park is a protected bird nesting area, so certain sections of the beach are roped off to allow the birds to rest and nest undisturbed. You’ll see hundreds of seabirds, especially during the warmer months — it feels like you’re stepping into a scene from a nature documentary.

But it’s not just birds that steal the show…

We were surprised and delighted when a gopher tortoise casually strolled through our campsite one morning! It was such a unique moment — totally unbothered, just out for a little walk. These guys are protected in Florida, so it was a special treat to see one up close in its natural habitat. Be sure to keep a respectful distance and never try to touch or move them.

You never know what you’ll see at Huguenot, and that’s part of the fun!

📍 Just Outside Jacksonville

Located just a short drive from downtown Jacksonville, Huguenot Campground is perfect for a weekend escape. Close enough for convenience, but remote enough to feel like you’re off the grid.

💬 Final Thoughts

If you’re craving a beach weekend that’s peaceful, budget-friendly, and full of adventure, I can’t recommend Huguenot Campground enough. Whether you’re there to relax, explore, or cast a fishing line, there’s something about camping by the sea that makes life feel simple and sweet.

We left with sandy toes, salty hair, and that good kind of tired you only get after a full day in the sun. And the best part? We’re already planning our next trip back.
